The main purpose of Friday’s blog is to highlight weekend events in Columbus, Mississippi. The reason is more than creating awareness. Anyone considering relocating to this area needs to know that the quality of life here is as good or exceeds other communities. So let’s see what makes Columbus special this weekend.
The Center for Creative Entrepreneurship at Mississippi University for Women is hosting the Listening to Small Business Forum Friday morning at the Nissan Auditorium in Parkinson Hall on the corner of 12th Street and 3rd Avenue South. Listen to experts and community leaders discuss topics like the 2012 Current Small Business Economy, trends that will impact the future of startups and boosting success of existing business in the Golden Triangle Area. Connect with business resources that can empower a business that employs 500 or fewer people. One of the featured speakers is Congressman Alan Nunnelee.
January is almost over. How are those New Year’s resolutions going? Fitness Factor on the corner of 18th Avenue and 5th Street near the US-82 by-pass can lend a hand if those resolutions include losing weight. There are weight management seminars on Friday at noon and Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Take the 24-day Lean Out-Tone Up challenge.
Baptist Center for Cancer Care offers free prostate PSA screenings for men over 40 the last Friday of each month. The Center for Cancer Care is in the northeast corner of the hospital campus on Baptist Blvd and Leigh Drive. The screening ends at 2:00 p.m. The hospital also has a continual need to volunteers. Contact United Way of Lowndes County for specific volunteer opportunities.
The members of the American Legion post in Columbus have their semi-annual blood drive on Saturday starting at 11:00 a.m. The Bloodmobile will be at the Legion Hall at 308 Chubby Drive, just east of US-45 near Bluecutt Road.
Lighthouse Baptist Church at 5030 Highway 182 East has a Children's Rally on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m. This is for children ages 5-12. The special guest is Allen Nye, the Magic Guy. The children can enjoy a fun filled day of games plus two magic shows.
Registration for the spring soccer ends Saturday. The Columbus-Lowndes Recreational Authority has full information at their office in Propst Park on the corner of Main Street and Martin Luther King near Stokes-Beard Elementary School.
The Strut in Style Fashion and Hair Show is Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in the Rent Auditorium on the corner of 11th and College Streets on the MUW campus. Doors open an hour before the show begins.
