First Weekend of 2012 in Columbus, MS

Every Friday we put real estate on the back burner so to speak in favor of highlighting community activities. Why do that? It’s hard to sell someone real estate in Columbus, Mississippi, unless they find the quality of life acceptable here. Let’s see what is happening this weekend.

Health related resolutions are among the most common of New Year’s resolutions. Our friends at Baptist Memorial Hospital have a full slate of activities, many of which are during the week. These include smoking cessation, nutrition education, and classes to improve appearance while undergoing chemotherapy. Contact the hospital for more information about specific education, prevention and support group programs.

If fitness is a resolution, then consider visiting the Frank P. Phillips YMCA on Main and Sixth Streets downtown this Friday at noon. It’s the Weight Watchers At Work lunch and learn. Take advantage of learning about how to balance portion size without major dietary changes. Learn to exercise for balanced weight loss. While at the Y, ask about waiting their joining fee for new members.

Bliss Yoga at 127 5th Street North – directly across from the Trotter Convention Center has “Day of Community Wellness” on Saturday. They have programs about fitness and nutrition workshops starting at 1:00 p.m.

Another resolution people make is to find and lend a hand to meaningful projects within the community. Finding projects is extremely easy, thanks to our good friends at United Way of Lowndes County. There are numerous volunteer opportunities available every day of the week and in just about every part of the county.

There are needs for volunteer youth coaches, being a friend to a senior adult, disaster response, working for a volunteer organization, helping clean up neighborhoods and many others. Contact United Way for information about volunteer opportunities. It’s a great way to meet new people and provide help at the same time.

It is extremely important for people wanting to participate in next weekend’s Day of Community Service honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King to pre-register with United Way this week.

The Rosenzweig Arts Center is located at 501 Main Street in downtown Columbus has a home exhibit in their gallery this month. View the photographs of internationally known photographer Birney Imes. His Partial to Home collection is on display every Tuesday-Saturday until the end of the month.

For more than 20 years Imes roamed the countryside of his native Mississippi photographing the people and places he encountered along the way. Working in both black and white and color, Imes’ photographs take viewers inside juke joints and dilapidated restaurants scattered across the Mississippi landscape. Imes’ photographs have been collected in three books: Juke Joint, Whispering Pines and Partial to Home, and have been exhibited in solo shows in the United States and Europe. His work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, La Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris and many public and private collections in the U.S. and abroad.

The Columbus Arts Council is hosting a “Season of Parties” as a way for you to personally ensure that art continues to be made in Mississippi. Each party incorporates the theme for this year's annual Gala, "Made in Mississippi" and is interpreted by individual party host. The season will starts at 6:00 p.m. Friday at the RAC and culminates in the Columbus Arts Council's Annual Gala and Auction in June.

Saturday is the second annual Jane Coleman Invitational Basketball Tournament, honoring the memory of the long time educator and coach at West Lowndes Middle School. Born in 1944, Coleman coached basketball and track, was the football statistician and put in time as cheerleading coach. For more than 30 years, she taught health, physical education and science, and was a member of nearly a dozen committees, programs and teams at the school.

Teams from Aliceville, AL, Columbus, New Hope, Noxubee, East Oktibbeha, West Oktibbeha and West Lowndes will compete starting at 10:00 a.m. at the Middle School Gym on Motley Road.
